Tokyo Lens Wiki

The story of Norm Nakamura, popularly referred to after his YouTube channel Tokyo Lens is one of a kind. There aren’t many whose love for music takes them across International waters. But Norm isn’t one of them. Although the 39-year-old YouTuber was born in Canada, his love for Shamisen music and the Japanese language soon saw him move to Japan in an effort to pursue his passion.

Right from a young age, Norm was attracted to the Traditional Japanese Shamisen Music. What was once an attachment soon became a passion that saw him move to Japan in 2007. In all these years, Norm has built a new life for himself in Japan, pursuing his undying passion for Shamisen music.

He first made his YouTube debut in 2017 under the name Tokyo Lens Vlog, his official YouTube handle wherein he started documenting his life as an apprentice to the great Yoshida Brothers of Japan. In addition, Norm’s videos document the lifestyle he has built in Japan over the years along with all the amazing things the East Asian Island country has to offer.

Norm always shared a passion for photography and videography. His skills behind the camera were impeccable and can be clearly seen through all these YouTube videos.

Moving To Japan

Norm’s first trip to Japan came back in 2005 when the YouTuber was left completely mesmerized by the country’s beauty at first instance. Moreover, his trips to Hokkaido and Sendai only added to the mesmerization.

Despite not knowing an ounce of Japanese, Norm got by pretty well, picturing the scenic beauty with his Sony Handycam. What was then a hobby soon became a skill as Norm started showcasing his love for videography through all his YouTube content.

But it was actually his brother, Alexander, that fuelled his inspiration to move to Japan altogether. Alexander was a big-time anime fan who dragged Norm to every Otakon Anime Convention in and around Washington.

It was then when YouTube first witnessed a live performance by the Yoshida Brother that not only left him astonished but became the driving force causing him to shift to Japan and become their apprentice.

Working With The Yoshida Brothers

Norm first became attached to Shamisen music when his friend gifted him a Yoshida Brothers 2 CD. When he first heard the brothers live at the Otakon Anime Convention in Washington, he upped and left for Japan in 2007 to become their apprentice.

But before he started working with the Yoshida Brothers, the YouTuber started working in an English conversation school while watching several Japanese street racing manga series to improve his Japanese. Over time, he became a fluent Japanese speaker.

However, it wasn’t until 2011 that Norm first succeeded in contacting the Yoshida brothers. Before that, he had several encounters with the Yoshida brothers but was rejected every time. Soon after, he himself approached the brothers and expressed his love and passion for Shamisen music.

Fortunately, Ryoichiro Yoshida, the elder Yoshida brother, heard him out and decided to give him a shot. Soon after, he became a working apprentice of the Yoshida brothers in December 2011.

For the next 8 years, Norm worked as a Tsuguru Shamisen, traveling and performing around the world alongside the great Yoshidas. Furthermore, he also starred in a few TV shows while also being awarded the “Special Recognition Award” in the National Tsugaru Shamisen Competition.
